Parrot Behaviour and Training by Bartbara Heidenreich

Barbara Heidenreich has been animal trainer and behavior consultant since 1990 and has trained birds and their handlers in zoos and other facilities around the world. She joined the board of directors of the International Association of Avian Trainers and Educators 1997 and is now it's first female president. In her career, she has learned how the science of behavior works, how positive reinforcement training allows one to forge an amazing bond with an animal, an how many people are seeking information to help them do the same.

Animal trainer Barbara Heidenreich uses solid scientific evidence to teach you positive reinforcement techniques to train your parrot in the Parrot Behavior Training DVD.  Barbara covers the basic fundamentals of parrot training with positive reinforcement.  She gives you detailed instructions on how to shape and improve your parrots behavior using companion parrots that are learning the behaviors for the first time.

"Positive reinforcement bird training allows caregivers to address behavior problems, train their birds to cooperate in their own medical care to reduce stress, and teach their parrots to be fun and interactive companions. The positive reinforcement approach also fosters a relationship based on trust. The result is a well behaved parrot who has learned there is no need for fear responses or aggressive behavior.  This gentle approach to creating and modifying behavior is highly successful. At the same time it maintains and promotes a wonderful relationship with your bird. The products and services provided by Good Bird ® Inc teach you how to attain your behavior and training goals with the added benefit of promoting a special bond with your parrot.." Good Bird, Inc. 2007

This DVD is the first of two training DVD's produced by Barbara. Dr. Doneley considers this DVD to be compulsory viewing for anyone who wants their bird to be more than just an ornament in a cage.

Training Your Parrot For the Veterinary Exam by Barbara Heidenreich

This is a 45 minute DVD that teaches companion parrot owners to modify their bird’s behaviours so as to make a visit to the veterinarian a more pleasant and comfortable experience for everyone involved – especially the parrot. Training Your Parrot for the Veterinary Exam begins with a brief review of the training concepts that were first introduced in Barbara Heidenreich’s first DVD ‘Parrot Behaviour and Training’ (see above).

After a brief introduction, explaining why this training is necessary, Training Your Parrot for the Veterinary Exam then moves on to a series of exercises that allow a companion parrot owner to teach behaviours relevant to a veterinary examination. These exercises include: Scale Training; Stepping up onto New People; Crate Training; Towel Restraint; Allowing the tactile Examination; Trimming Flight Feathers; Opening the Mouth on Cue; Nail Trimming; and Generalisation (teaching the bird to perform these behaviours in different environments and with different people).
It then concludes with an interview with Dr. Scott Echols DVM Dip ABVP (Avian Practice), a well known American avian veterinarian. In this interview, Scott discusses the importance of preventative health care (including annual health examinations), what an avian veterinarian is and how to find one, and how this training is relevant to a veterinary examination.

 Captive Foraging by Scott Echols

In the wild, parrots spend 80% of their day looking for, and consuming, food. The remaining 20% is spent on grooming, social interactions and 'napping'. In captivity, with food presented each day in a bowl, a parrot needs to spend only 20% of its day looking fopr and consuming food. The remaining 80-% of its day, if not filled with social opportunities, can lead to boredom with resultant behavioural problems - screaming, self-mutilation, repetitive behaviours or excessive sleeping.

Scott Echols' DVD introduces the concept of captive foraging - the provision of food in such a way that a bird has to actively seek their food and develop techniques for gaining access to it. Scott discusses the importance of foraging to the mental wellbeing of companion birds, and then discusses - step by step - how to teach your bird foraging behaviours. This DVD is simple to understand and follow, and the implementation of its techniques will make your bird far happier and better behaved.
